Patio Lattice Refresh

A customer contacted me about some decaying privacy lattice that surrounded their patio space. When I looked at the existing lattice and design I discovered that indeed much of the lattice was actively decomposing and crumbling at the bottom edge where it was framed in. Upon closer inspection I discovered that the way the lattice were installed there was no where for water to go once it was rained on. The bottom of the lattice was completely enclosed by a 2x4 underneath and surrounding 1x1 trim that ended up trapping water and giving it nowhere to go but soak into the wood.

To remedy this issue we redesigned the framing to sandwich the lattice but include a gap at the bottom of the lattice to allow for drainage. With this new framing the lattice will never be sitting in standing water and thus allow the wood to stay dry. We also primed every face of the wood including cut ends and parts that would be hidden by framing or trim. This ensures the wood is protected from any water that might seep in between the trim and lattice during head rainstorms.

In the end the customer was very happy with the final product that was prepped and ready for the painting. They said they especially appreciated the attention to detail and apparent pride in craftsmanship of the project. We look forward to returning to take photos after the painters add the final touch.
