Porch Structural Framing Repair

The front porch roof of this house up in Rhododendron, Or was sagging and pulling away from the main house due to failing structural support. To fix this we first buit temporary walls under the roof structure to support it as we removed the old rotten wood. After the demolition of the old framing we used bottle jacks to re-level the roof and get it back in plane with the rest of the house. This process is always a little nerve racking and has to be done slowly and carefully.

Next we removed deck boards to pour new concrete footings for replacement beams. We set those beams with stand off brackets that lift the wood 1” off replacing that last 1” with galvanized steel that will hold up to the wet conditions far longer than we could expect any wood to hold up. After that we prestained all of our replacement wood and began installing it.

The customer asked for an added aesthetic design detail of the 45 degree angle beams on the font framing. This was especially fun to create and presented a challenge of matching the angle of the roof pitch. I always love creating jigs to find the correct angles and lengths for these types of pieces.

Finally, we wrapped the pressure treated posts with cedar material to match the look of the rest of the house. It all got stained to match and the final look is outstanding. Customer and coworkers alike really enjoyed this project and we especially appreciated the final product.

At the end of the final day, we played some disc golf in the basket on the property and took a swim in the Sandy river that was a 5 minute walk down the road. What a way to wrap up a cool project!
