Patio Covering

Look at the bright and lofty feel of this patio covering. We are really happy with the way this one turned out.

This customer really wanted to be able to use their patio space during the rainy months but didn’t want to lose the morning time light that comes into their dining room that abutts their patio. Our solution was to build a patio covering that still allows light to come through but provides good coverage to keep everything dry. We were able to maximize the rafter spacing to 24” by using oversized rafters which perfectly matched up with the size of the clear roof panels. This did two beneficial things for the project: First, the clear panels allowed light to pass freely through and illuminate not only the patio but also the windows to the house underneath, and second, the framing stayed out of the way but allowed for solid structural support for those windy or snow/ice fill times of the year.

On this project we worked hard to maximize the usable space by pouring concrete footings that allowed the posts to sit right on the outside edge of the patio deck. Living in the Pacific Northwest we always use offset post bases. These galvanized post bases lift the bottom of the post up 1” to keep them out of standing water. This reduces rot and elongates the life of the post by decades.

We also needed to refrain from mounting the top side of the covering to the roof because the roof was old and needed to be replaced in the next few years. This led us to elevate the roof of the patio covering a little to allow for workable space in the future to access the gutters, and roof for maintenance. A benefit of this was that it increased the pitch/slope of the roof reducing the chance of sitting water and limiting the amount of debris that would collect on the roof over time. This helps the homeowner out by reducing the amount of cleaning needed and keeps the roof clean for that wonderful sunlight to come through

After wrapping the pressure treated posts to hide all of the hardware we stained everything to match. It created a beautiful final product that is both lofty and bright. We hope the client loves the look of this for years to come
